Malaysia Visit - Petronas Twin Tower, KL

Twin Tower at night

I do have a bag full of blog posts pending with me to be written due to the obvious reason - work which pays me.  My hope is to get some time to offload lots of memories had had in the recent past which I couldn't put down in this blog.  Let this be a start of my regular write-ups.  At least I hope so, like the guy who says this is my last cigarette.

After discussing this for years, we finally went for an overseas trip to Malaysia and Singapore for a week.  Yes, two countries in a week.  4 days each.  It was hectic but we managed to trim down the trip to avoid being exhausted.  Especially when you have a toddler traveling with you, you cannot afford to go the extra mile.  We took the air-asia  airlines to KL and back.  Their base rate it very low (Rs.3500) and they had us pay for everything else we need from food to luggage.  Overall the cost was affordable and I like when they say you don't have to pay for others, means in a full service airline even if you don't carry any luggage, your ticket is subsidizing others who are carrying lots of load and eating/drinking a lot.

This post is about our trip to the famous Petronas Twin Tower in Kuala Lumpur. It is an icon of KL and Malaysia and any visit to Malaysia cannot complete by visiting this magnificent structure.  Twin Towers were the tallest in the world for six years till 2004 when Taipai 101 was commissioned.  There are two aspects of visiting the tower.  Watching the magnificent structure in the night with the lighting is what I think the best about the towers.  Seeing them in day light doesn't bring that sense of beauty.  The second one is to climb up the tower, not literally but by taking the lift even though some has actually climbed the tower previously the traditional way.

Below the tower is the Surya KLCC (Kuala Lumpur Convention Center) Mall and besides it is the KLCC Park which is a 17acre partk with fountain, jogging track etc.  KLCC mall is an upmarket retail mall with all high end luxury shops.  It also has an art gallery, aquarium and science center. We visited the Tower on the day we reached Malaysia. We were staying with my friend and he was our tour guide.  After visiting Batu Caves in the afternoon, we headed to KLCC and parked the car in the KLCC parking lot.

If you come early in the evening, you can spend some time in the KLCC park and fountain and visit the Twin Towers in the night.  May major aim was to take some photos which I did.  Behind the KLCC, there is a small lake and a fountain which looks good in the night.

In front of the Twin Tower is a small fountain and garden which gives the best view of the towers.  That was the easy part of visiting the towers.  What about taking a trip up the towers.  There were two options in front of us, one is to reach the observation deck at 81st floor or the skybridge between 41st and 42nd floor.  The tickets are always given in the morning and the rush is pretty bad.  You need to be in the queue early morning to be lucky enough to get a ticket (we were there at 7am).  Ticket costs around 20 RM per person for the skybridge.  By the time we reached the counter, the observatory tickets were sold out and we could buy the skybridge ticket for a 4:30pm slot (all morning slots were full).  Hence we decided to roam around the city and come back to KLCC in the evening.  We also had plans to visit KL Tower in the evening to see the city in the night.  That night we were also traveling to Singapore by bus.

In the evening we reached the KLCC just on time and before we were taken to the lift, they showed us a film on the history of Petronas towers.  There were also some exhibits about the history of towers.  Once that is over, we were taken into a large lift which ferried us to the 41st floor of the building.  The sky bridge is large and it connects between the two towers.  View from above is good, but I wouldn't rate it as a exciting experience.  It was not definitely worth the effort taken to get the tickets.
